Testing comments!
The book is very interesting in many aspects, covering the basics of all phases in game development and how to achieve results with unity3d. But personally, I have three main interests in this book:
1)Chapter 11: Performance Tweaks and Finishing Touches
As a game developer that worked with other engines, I know that performance tweaks is something very dependent on the platform you’re using, it needs specific unity knowledge that I current don’t have.
2)Chapter 13: Chapter 13: Testing and Further Study
Normally game development books don’t discuss approaches like testing, public testing and etc. I’m very interested in its tips about that, since I don’t have experience in this phase of a project.
3)Chapter 12: Building and Sharing
I’m very interested on the last two topics: Sharing your work
Sharing on Kongregate.com
I’m curious about what the book has to show me.
Hi, little contestant from France here.
Former 3D animator and now writing about indie games, I’m also currently learning Unity by trying to prototype my own project from scratch, I want to touch all sides of gaming development, from scripting to level design, with external assets importation in the middle. With such a didactic book, I’d manage to comprehend all aspects of Unity I don’t have approached yet, and gather tips ans methodology for those I already started to play with…
im interested in:
Create player character interactions
The book looks like it is really good. I like that it is treating C# and JavaScript equally. Most just focus on JavaScript. The building and sharing chapter as well as the performance tweaks and finishing touches look particularly interesting. Look forward to reading this book.
I was hoping for a section on Networking/multiplayer but without that I think I’m most interested in Chapters 4 through 6.
Chapter 4: Player Characters and Further Scripting
Chapter 5: Interactions
Chapter 6: Collection, Inventory, and HUD
And if that’s not specific enough, then I’ll go with the beginning of Chapter 5, dealing with common settings for models as well as animations.
I have the previous book and I’m most interested on what has changed!
Seriously, though: C# scripting!
I really like to read about Chapter 13: Testing and Further Study..
Hi !
As a 3D artist and designer, i’m very interested by the basics, and the 3D integration / process / workflow since i use Cinema4d, and already did watch some basics live training.
I’m interested in going deeper into Unity. I followed this project since version 2, and didn’t dug really into it… yet. This book is an opportunity to dive in more seriously
Heya!!! I have recently started into c# scripting and from researching this seems to be the best engine to go with for beginners and professionalism purposes, with a pretty little interface to boot.
This book is about the best thing I have seen yet for learning this program next to your tutorials. The book gives close attention to digging in for beginners which sometimes (most of the time) is hard to find in a A-Z type of book. A+ from what I read up on it, A+++
i’m interested in:
ANY Unity3D book that has code written in C#! (seriously, why are all those other books in UnityScript? blah!)
I too am very interested in the C# aspect of things, since I prefer it over Javascript and similar languages. Another thing I’m looking forward to is the Player Interaction and Bulding and Sharing chapter. And of course I’m hoping to find good workflows to get my 3D assets prepared and into Unity with the least amount of hassle…
What interests me about the book? Hah, pretty much everything. I’m just getting into Unity (3.4.2) as a part of my Games Development module this year (Computer Science), and having a solid reference that doesn’t involve trawling through and experimenting with code snippets from the API would obviously benefit me.
Games development is something I aim to aspire to when (more accurately; sometime after – you’ve got to climb up the rungs first!) I graduate, however in the time before I even apply for any games-related jobs I will be building my own games from scratch, presumably in Unity (as it’s the application I will be most familiar with). Already got a couple of text-based games in the works in Java, so Unity is my first attempt at a 3D world. Should be fun!
Chapters 4 – 6 interest me the most (I love designing and creating RPG settings and rule systems, and as such player characters feature heavily), though technical expertise such as animation (Chapter 10) and performance tweaks are always worthwhile for me to create a solid Unity-based product.
As a C# and ActionScript developer interested in games I have been keeping an eye on Unity and seen many Flash developers turn to Unity as a great tool for games development. As such I would be really interested in the quick small casual gaming aspect covered in your book. Having enjoyed your first book on Unity, I know there will be so much more to learn from your latest edition.
I’m most interested in Chapter 11, Performance Tweaks and Finishing Touches, because of all the (2D) games I’ve made on other platforms, I can never get them polished and released. Chapter 6 on HUD and Inventory systems are also of particular interest to me, as it is the backbone of a RPG.
As many others, I kinda like the C# scripting, all other ressources are written in Java/Unityscript.
And I’m looking for an mid/advanced level book to go further in my use of Unity, and your book seems perfect for this.
Hello
As a newbie to unity and making games in general I’m pretty much interested in the hole package. After spending hours and hours in level editors for games like LittleBigPlanet, I’m starting to feel the need for more freedom and the ability to make many ideas, without compromising with what will work in the game. Scripting is especially new and exciting to me.
Jonas
Wow, a book covering so many aspects of Unity and game development in general!
I would love to read through chapter 1 first, to learn all about the mathematical basics I need to develop a game.
Then I would read each single line covering programming, integrating assets into a scene and giving behavior to all these objects.
The creation of those assets, however, I would commit to my brother, since he is way better in digital arts.
Hi, I’m interested in Chapter 11: Performance Tweaks and Finishing Touches and Chapter 12: Building and Sharing
when are your new tutorials coming out?
curently working on a lot of new tutorials for the official site, plus a new learning game. Expected Q2.
I have been working in the web programming world for over 10 years (mainly java and asp.net) now but have always glanced at the gaming world and dreamed. I hope to use this book to learn game programming and make my first IOS game. Unity seems like a very interesting game engine because it exist for many platforms. So when you support Windows Phone 8 I hope that my IOS game will be easy to convert
So my initial interest in the book is: An understanding of the Unity 3D Engine and game development
Not commenting to win the book here as I have already bought it, I just wanted to say that I believe this is the best Unity book to date – congrats Will!
I found your earlier book very useful. I would find C# scripting examples
the most useful, as well as the inventory system.
Thanks Jonathan! very kind
As an addict to game development I was looking for tutorials and books to learn how to developing games. After visiting LearnMeSilly I became a fan and programmed my first game in Unity thanks to LearnMeSilly. This book will help me strengthen my basic skills and it will speed up my learning process because it contains all important aspects that a game developer must have, to develop a stunning game.
What I’d really want about this book is to have extended knowledge about some interesting aspects of Unity 3D that I have not been involved with like, lightmaps and terrains. And to have a great resource to come by when in doubt
I’m the coolest kid in my programming class and in various clubs at UCF because I have a game out on the android market.
I owe a lot to you and your tutorials online, if it weren’t for them I probably wouldn’t have a strong understanding of the basics in Unity.
The reason I want your book more than anything is just to have something to show to all of my friends. They want to get into game development but they are too stubborn to look online and learn. With this book I could take it to all of my clubs and share your techniques and methods inside of Unity!
I’m still new to Unity and I love your tutorials. They have really helped me and are still helping me in shaping the way my mobile game is coming together. Thank you for all your help and your contribution to the Unity community! You really level the learning curve of the engine and help noobies like me stay interested in continuing when they hit a wall. That being said I’d love anything written by you, because I’m sure it is as detailed as all of your video tutorials. Thanks a lot
Gimme da book!
Since beeing a young boy, I’ve been playing computer games. Always I wanted to make my own game, having a cool idea for as long as I can remember. Having learned about Unity and it’s numerous cool and easy to use features recently, I’ve been looking for a good entry point to learn using Unity to develop games.
I can’t tell you what interests me the most about the book yet, but I’d be happy to do so if I’d win a copy of your book.
Hello, world!
I love optimizing, so:
Chapter 11: Performance Tweaks and Finishing Touches
